Warner Bros. Discovery are reportedly in talks for a new Harry Potter TV series on HBO.

According to Bloomberg, there would be seven series in the new adaptation based on each of the Harry Potter books, which would suggest the project would span for many years.

The publication writes that talks between the entertainment conglomerates are still in the preliminary stage and author JK Rowling has not yet signed off. It is understood Rowling would be involved in the series “to ensure it remains loyal to her original material”, but she would not be its primary creator.

This comes as Warner Bros Discovery prepares its new streaming strategy, which it will present to the general public and investors next week on 12th April. The presentation will give a first look at its new streaming platform, which will combine HBO Max and Discovery+ into one.

It is believed this new Harry Potter series would form the new content for this.

Warner Bros were, of course, behind the Harry Potter film series from 2001 to 2011 and put out eight films with J.K Rowling that generated up to $7.7 billion at the global box office. The company also produced multiple spin offs for the franchise, including the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them series.

In November last year, it was also reported that Warner Bros were working to make more Harry Potter films and during an investors call outlined they were going to focus on franchises going forward.

Some of the Harry Potter cast have also expressed their desire to return to their roles in a hypothetical sequel.

Speaking to The Independent, Draco Malfoy star Tom Felton responded to whether he would like to return to Hogwarts.

The actor said: “I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t consider it.

“I definitely don’t miss Draco Malfoy, but I am very affectionately linked to him.”
