It’s been 30 years since Sylvester Stallone starred in action-thriller Cliffhanger, and now the Hollywood superstar is reprising his role of mountain climber Gabe Walker.

The original 1993 movie sees Stallone’s lead character become embroiled in a heist of a US Treasury plane flying through the Rocky Mountains. Sly’s Gabe finds himself up against a group of criminals who have managed to lose their $100 million stash during a plane crash.  After being persuaded to help rescue a group of stranded hikers, he learns - oh dear - that they are actually a gang of violent robbers who need help to locate their missing dosh.

The reboot will be directed by Ric Roman Waugh, who has previously worked on Greenland, and Angel Has Fallen. Whilst it’s not known at this stage what kind of situation the Rocky star will find himself in this time (although presumably it will involve climbing/heights), Variety reports that casting is currently underway for a lead actor to headline an ensemble cast.

In a statement, Waugh said: “Growing up with the biggest action films of the 80s and 90s, working on many of them myself, Cliffhanger was by far one of my favourite spectacles.

"To be at the helm of the next chapter, scaling the Italian Alps with the legend himself, Sylvester Stallone, is a dream come true.”

He added: “It’s going to be a great challenge and blast taking this franchise to new heights, a responsibility I don’t take lightly.”

Producer Neal H. Moritz added: “I’ll never forget the thrill I felt watching Sylvester Stallone in Cliffhanger. I am incredibly excited to be working with him and Ric Waugh to continue the story of Gabe Walker and introduce this iconic story to a new generation of filmgoers around the world.”

Sly is about to show a different side to himself in reality series, The Family Stallone. The Rambo actor is allowing a camera crew behind closed doors for a glimpse of his life with wife Jennifer Flavin and daughters Sophia, Sistine and Scarlet.

The eight-part series will air on Paramount+ from 18th May in the UK. Before that, the actor can be seen in Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.3, which arrives in cinemas this week.
