Be prepared to swoon once more, as it's said that Downton Abbey will be coming back to our TV screens.

The much-loved period drama has been away for eight-years, and a source has revealed plans for Downton Abbey to return.

The series focused on the Crawley Family, and the show soon became a smash hit.

It originally appeared on ITV, and soon also turned into a film on the big screen, thrilling fan.

The award winning show was written by Julian Fellows.

He also wrote the film Gosford Park.

The series featured historic events including Titanic and World War I, and featured the Crawley family trying to adapt.

Some 7.4 million people watched the final episode back in 2015, on Christmas Day. What a gift!

It is anticipated that Fellows will continue as the showrunner.

Fans will also have to wait and see whether the likes of Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery and Elizabeth McGovern will reappear.

Here's hoping!

The source said there is a 'plan' for a new series.

Rumours even say it could air towards the end of this year.

They said there is a lot of "excitement" about the potential return.

They told the Daily Mail: “There is a plan which is in development and there is a lot of excitement about.

“There is casting taking place, and it would be great if all of the big stars can return. People loved Downton. It became a British institution and it has been much missed since it left our screens.”

“There is huge excitement around this project. It was a Sunday night favourite and got huge viewing figures. There has been very little to compete with it ever since it ended.”

Maybe it's time for a rewatch of the first few series.
