Doctor Who has confirmed a classic character from the Tom Baker era will be returning for series 14.

We have already been spoiled with a line-up of returning characters in the new series with David Tennant reprising his role as the timelord and Catherine Tate as his companion, Donna Noble.

There are also some exciting new characters on the way with the likes of Jinx Monsoon and Neil Patrick Harris joining the cast.

Now it seems Doctor Who fans can look forward to the return of another classic character from the Tom Baker years.

The news was announced in the Doctor Who Magazine in an entry from script editor Scott Handcock’s production diary after a day of shooting in mid-April.

It read: “It's a triple-unit shoot day as [producer] Julie Anne Robinson wraps on Block Three, David Tennant continues with his publicity material for the specials, and [director] Ben Chessell kicks off filming on Block Four – with Jinkx Monsoon's announcement.

“What isn’t announced is that Jinx’s first day on set teams her with an unexpected name from the Tom Baker era.”

Baker played the Time Lord from 1974 to 1981 and faced many iconic characters during his time in the TARDIS.

Any guesses of who this “unexpected name” could be?

It was announced that Jinx Monsoon would be playing a “major role” in the new series as “the Doctor’s most powerful enemy yet” back in April.

Many details are still to be revealed, including the character’s name, but the BBC shared a new video of Jinkx in her glamorous costume as she begins filming for the show, with a piano key design hinting at a potential musical element within the new series.

It comes after the announcement that Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa would be taking over from Jodie Whittaker as the new Doctor, and Coronation Street’s Millie Gibson as his new companion Ruby Sunday.
