On your marks, get set… bake! The 14th series of The Great British Bake Off has kicked off, with a new host and a whole new set of contestants entering the tent.

And one of the bakers has already gone home, as episode one brought the first elimination of the new series.

It was Cake Week last night (26th September), and the Signature challenge saw the contestants tasked with making a vertical layer cake. After admitting she was nervous, Saku received - not a handshake - but a hug from judge Paul Hollywood.

Next, the Technical Challenge saw the bakers make a chocolate and raspberry cake - just like the one from the opening credits. With Alison Hammond joining Noel Fielding as co-host, she was given a sign name by GBBO’s first deaf contestant, Tasha, during this section of the show.

Dan came first in the Technical Challenge, ahead of Amos in second place.

Then it all came down to the Showstopper Challenge, which required the new competitors to make an animal-shaped cake.

Among the animals, there was an amazing duck, some dogs of various standard, a very impressive robin, and a beaver, which led to much innuendo.

Ultimately, Dan did enough to earn Star Baker, while there were a few candidates for the first elimination.

It turns out that Amos, despite his good performance in the Technical, was the first baker to leave the tent after her Orca whale cake did not impress Prue Leith and Paul.

In a note shared on X (formerly Twitter), Amos said: “Feeling the LOVE and will always remember my Bake Off journey as the fondest of memories.”

Next week is Biscuit week!

The Great British Bake Off continues next Tuesday 3rd October at 8pm on Channel 4. Stream episode one online.
