The first couple have been sent home from the new series of Strictly Come Dancing.

Last Saturday’s opening live show of the series saw the new batch of celebrities and their professional partners hit the dance floor for the first time, but there was no public vote. This weekend, the judges combined the scores from this week and last week and, when added to the results of the viewers’ votes, two couples were forced to face the dreaded dance-off.

The two celebs in the dance-off were telly legend Les Dennis and radio presenter and broadcaster, Nikita Kanda.

Both couples ran through their routines again, in the hope of better impressing judges Motsi Mabuse, Craig Revel Horwood, Anton Du Beke and head judge, Shirley Ballas.

Nikita Kanda and her partner Gorka Márquez performed the Charleston to Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) by Beyoncé, before Les and his dance partner, Nancy Xu, delivered their Samba to Rock The Boat by Hues Corporation.

After the two routines, it was Les who became the first celebrity to depart the show in 2023.

Craig said that Nikita and Gorka “danced the best on the night” and were “most improved”, while Motsi said “both couples danced better in the dance off” and also chose to save Nikita and Gorka.

Anton agreed, saying: “I think the couple who did the best job were Nikita and Gorka.”

Head Judge Shirley Ballas also agreed and said she would have decided to save Nikita and Gorka, had she needed to.

Speaking about Nancy after his elimination, Les said: “I’ve had the best time, this lady has been amazing, a great teacher, she’s really put me through my paces. I did as well as I could for you, I hope!”

He added: “That lot up there, I’m going to miss you so much. I really appreciate and understand the judge’s point of view, thank you so much (to Shirley) for giving me a 10 for entertainment. I hope I’ve entertained, that’s what I came here for. Strictly is the best and the people who put this on, you’re just all amazing!”

The remaining fourteen couples will take to the dancefloor next week in a spectacular Movie Week Special.

Strictly Come Dancing returns on Saturday 7th October at 6:20pm with the results show on Sunday 8th October at 7:15pm on BBC One.
