Footballing icon David Beckham has admitted he’s had to face some of the most challenging moments in his career while making his new four-part documentary series for Netflix.

The tell-all docu-series will lift the lid on David's spectacular career and his journey from a working-class lad in East London to one of the world's most famous footballers, plus his high-profile relationship with Spice Girl Victoria Beckham.

Becks and some of the biggest names in sport had the red carpet rolled out for the London premiere on Tuesday (4th October), and while there, the international sportsman revealed how there were some moments he wasn’t keen on revisiting so soon.

One of those crucial call-backs featured the 1998 World Cup, during which Beckham was sent off for kicking Argentina player Diego Simeone's leg.

Speaking to talkSPORT about the inclusion of his not-so-shining moments, the star said: "It was one of the toughest moments because when I decided to do this, I wanted to do it right. I'm never going to do a life documentary again and I think it was an important moment to talk about.

“I'd never really talked about it. I'd never really looked back because…I was with Manchester United. I was protected by Sir Alex Ferguson and my teammates and the fans. So I really wasn't aware of exactly what was going on. But looking back and seeing the archive and seeing everything, that for me was a difficult moment.”

Beckham was joined by wife Victoria and his young family on the red carpet, and when asked why now was the right time to make a documentary about his life, the sporting icon revealed how his nearest and dearest were a big inspiration.

He added: “When I retired 10 years ago, a lot of people were asking me if I was going to do a life doc. It really didn't feel right at the time. But then obviously heading towards my 10 year anniversary of retirement, I felt it was the right thing to do and the right time. I wanted something for my family to look back on and to really enjoy.”

The four episodes, directed by Academy Award-winner Fisher Stevens and produced by Academy Award and Emmy Award-winning producer John Battsek, will be an hour long.

The show is set to "highlight elements of the Beckham's married life that viewers will be able to relate to".

The Netflix synopsis reads: Netflix states: "It features a mixture of never-before-seen personal archive footage from the last forty years, candid current-day moments, and interviews with the family, friends, and footballing figures who have been part of his journey."

Beckham is out on Netflix now.
