The world’s first green containership, the announcement of which you may remember being reported here on Virgin Radio’s Good News, docked in Felixstowe this week.
The methanol powered Laura Maersk represents a major milestone for the shipping industry who have traditionally used diesel fuel and therefore account for 3% of the entire world's greenhouse gas emissions. The 172 metre-long container ship however, takes a different tack by using methanol, a fuel that’s more commonly used in racing cars.
And this is no ordinary methanol, either: in this case it’s made from methane harvested from food scraps and landfill. Shipping behemoths Maersk have another 24 of these methanol-powered ships on order through to 2027 and have pledged to reach net zero by 2040, which is pretty amazing for a sea cargo company.

Imagine trying to explain buying flat packed furniture made in Sweden from a huge warehouse in Croydon to a Victorian carpenter.
Picture his incredulity as I tell you that you'll soon be able to buy another swedish thing flat packed to save CO2 in transit, but it’s not a wardrobe, it’s a car, an electric car, as we say hello to the Luvly O. Swedish car start up Luvly are about to launch their debut vehicle, the O, which comes with two 35-pound battery packs that can be swapped to double its small range of 62 miles to 124. With a top speed of 55 miles per hour, the car is 37 inches shorter than the already-pocket sized Fiat 500.
It’s taken inspiration from F1 cars with an aluminium chassis, and an emphasis on safety with a clever kinetic energy absorbing foam shock absorbing system around the car’s skeleton. It’s the greenest car in the world, 80% of it is recyclable and made from already existing, sustainable materials -the price tag? €10,000 and don’t worry, although it’s flat packed you don’t have to put it together, they have experts to do that for you
