Ruth Jones has revealed the story behind one of her strangest Gavin and Stacey fan encounters.

Speaking with FM104 ahead of appearing at Dublin's Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in Sister Act next February, the Gavin and Stacey star and co-creator spilled the beans about the most “inappropriate” place that she’s been recognised.

“People often shout ‘Oh! What’s occurring?’ and sometimes in the most inappropriate of places,” she began. “I was at my mother in law’s funeral - this is going back 10 years now - and we were doing the line-up thing at the end.

“I loved my mother in law and it was a very, very sad occasion, and then somebody came up to me in the line-up and went ‘Oh! What’s occurring?’ And I went ‘Uh, my mother in law’s died? That’s what’s occurring!’”

However, the actress also stressed that she’s usually delighted that the show still has people quoting it to her to this day.

“I think people- it’s sort of like a connection thing, and I think people do it because they love the show. And it’s a compliment really,” she added.

The actress admitted during her interview that “people probably know me best” for Gavin and Stacey or the Sky show Stella, and shared how she hopes these fans will turn out to see her in her new stage role as Mother Superior in Sister Act, which will be headed to the West End next year as well.

“It was kind of out of the blue that I got offered the part, and it didn’t really sink in for a while,” she explained. “Because I suppose I wouldn’t have automatically thought of myself as a typical kind of casting for Mother Superior.

“However, when I got to know more about it, I just thought ‘Oh, yeah, I can see how I could play that actually’,” she revealed. “Because I think it’s a role that is sort of open to interpretation with whoever plays it.”

Ruth Jones’ interpretation of Sister Act’s Mother Superior will come to Dublin’s Bord Gáis Energy Theatre from 13th-24th February 2024. She will then make her West Debut at London’s Dominion Theatre on Friday, 15th March 2024.
