Former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has shared his thoughts on a “terrifying” hypothetical situation involving the world famous time traveller.
Speaking in an interview with The Times, the screenwriter shared his worries about what would happen to the fan-favourite show if its writers didn’t keep an element of comedy present in its scripts.
“If you take the comedy away [from Doctor Who], the Doctor is terrifying,” he shared, while discussing his history with the show.
“I was writing studio sitcoms like Coupling, then Doctor Who came along. Suddenly people were saying I write serious drama. What are you talking about? Even the Weeping Angels had two sitcom characters with funny names, Sally Sparrow and Kathy Nightingale,” he explained.
“Russell [T Davies] writes like that too,” he said, complimenting the show’s current showrunner and evidently showing his belief the programme remains in safe hands. “If there’s a page without a joke in it, it feels wrong.”
Also in the interview, Moffat discussed his debut play The Unfriend, and his upcoming comedy-drama about cancel culture, Douglas is Cancelled.
On the latter, the writer shared: “It’s more about people’s terror of cancellation.” Explaining his own thoughts on the topic, he continued: “I don’t know how much we’d continue to fear cancellation if anyone was bombing us.
“If someone is capable of being cancelled, they’re a good person. You can’t cancel Hitler or the Yorkshire Ripper,” he added. “Only someone who cares about their reputation and has a conscience.”
Douglas is Cancelled will star Hugh Bonneville as Douglas, a TV news anchor who faces cancellation after comments he makes at a cousin’s wedding cause a storm on social media. Marvel and former Doctor Who star Karen Gillan will also star in the show as his younger more social media savvy co-anchor Madeline.
Steven’s play The Unfriend follows married couple Pete (Lee Mack) and Debbie (Sarah Alexander) as they deal with the conundrum of inviting a friend they recently made to stay at their home, only to find out before she arrives that she’s a serial killer.
The Unfriend is currently showing at London’s Wyndham Theatre until 9th March 2024. Douglas is Cancelled will air on ITVX in 2024.
