Call the Midwife’s Fred appears to be making a good recovery in the latest clip released from the show.

The fan-favourite character, portrayed by Cliff Parisi, was struck down with sepsis in episode three, leading many to worry he wouldn’t make it through series 13.

However, thankfully he was able to recover, and now in this exclusive snippet from episode four, the lovable personality can be seen back in apparent good health and joining his wife Violet (Annabelle Apsion) in her preparations ahead of being made the new mayor of Tower Hamlets.

Watch our exclusive Call the Midwife episode four clip below:

Violet’s journey to becoming mayor, documented last episode, was a difficult one. She came up against a stern and dismissive competitor, and had to run the majority of her campaign while Fred was seriously unwell in hospital.

Considering how Call the Midwife has developed a reputation for shock departures of much-loved characters, it was much appreciated by fans that Fred was not killed off in episode three. And light-hearted scenes like Fred and Violet’s dinner date help balance the show, which also deals with difficult subjects.

Episode four promises more emotional moments from a tuberculosis-focused storyline involving Nancy, Sister Veronica, and Dr Turner treating the people of Poplar. Its synopsis also teases trouble for Trixie as she “makes a serious mistake at work”.

The Nonnatus House family will also be joining the world in looking up to the skies (and at the television) to watch the Apollo 11 moon landings at a public showing held at Nonnatus House. But pupil midwives Joyce and Rosalind won’t quite be able to sit back and relax, as they face a review following three months of training with the midwives team.

Call the Midwife returns on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Sunday, 28th January at 8pm.
