Fans were left in tears after Channel 4 and the BBC paid tribute to presenter Jonnie Irwin during the latest episodes of A Place in the Sun and Escape to the Country.

Jonnie, who had co-hosted both series throughout his career, sadly passed away aged 50 on Friday (2rd February) after being diagnosed with lung cancer in 2020. He then announced his cancer was terminal in November 2022.

On Monday (5th February) A Place in the Sun followed Danni Menzies who was helping house hunters in Manilva in Spain. At the beginning of the programme, an announcement shared that the entire episode would be dedicated to Jonnie.

The credits also included a picture of the restoration expert alongside the message: “In memory of Jonnie Irwin 1973-2024.”

Meanwhile, Escape to the Country did their own tribute to celebrate Jonnie’s work on Monday. The presenter had been a co-host since 2010, and the BBC lifestyle series aired a montage of his best bits from over the years.

Fans rushed to social media to share their emotional reactions to seeing Jonnie’s shows pay homage to him. Writing on X (formerly Twitter), one fan wrote: “@BBC @Escape_Country choking back tears at seeing @jonnieirwin on his final show, and the tribute at the end! Rest well now Jonnie you fought the hard fight #Escapetothecountry #Aplaceinthesun.”

Another said: “Sorry to hear of the passing of tv presenter #JonnieIrwin last Friday. He came across as a genuine guy. Was on #C4 #APlaceInTheSun for some years. May he rest in peace.”

“Lovely montage and tribute to #jonnieirwin on  #escapetothecountry #aplaceinthesun,” commented a third.

Jonnie’s A Place in the Sun co-stars were among the first to pay tribute to him upon hearing the news of his passing on Friday.

Scarlette Douglas, who hosted the Channel 4 series from 2015 to 2022, shared a smiling photo of Jonnie, and wrote in the caption: “May the sun always shine on you Jonnie. RIP.”

Meanwhile, Jasmine Harman, who hosted over 200 episodes of A Place in the Sun alongside Jonnie, posted her own lengthy tribute on the social media platform, and reminisced about the first time they met on the series.

Jasmine’s emotional statement read;  “You were so charismatic and energetic, so confident and fun. I understood immediately why they had to have you.

“Your cheeky-chappy persona and naughty sense of humour always broke the ice and made people laugh. Everyone warmed to you and you had the incredible ability to connect with people, making them feel like they’d known you for years.”

The thoughts of everyone at Virgin Radio continue to go out to Jonnie's family and friends.
