Martin Freeman is coming back for a second series of The Responder, and we don’t have long to wait until the new episodes land.

Buckle up, because the award-winning BBC series is back next month, and will once again see The Office star Freeman play urgent response officer Chris Carson trying to stay on the straight and narrow. However, when he crosses a top drug dealer, he starts to fall back into old ways.

When it returns on 5th May, the Liverpool-based drama will also welcome back Adelayo Adedayo (Unsaid Stories; Timewasters) as Chris' junior partner Rachel Hargreaves.

Josh Finan (Baby Reindeer, The Gentlemen) is back as Marco, and MyAnna Buring returns as Kate Carson.

Also returning are Warren Brown as Raymond Mullen, Emily Fairn as Casey, Philip S McGuinness as Ian, Faye McKeever as Jodie Sweeney, Mark Womack as Barry and Amaka Okafor as Deborah Barnes.

New cast members include Chernobyl’s Adam Nagaitis, Bernard Hill from Titanic and Tin Star’s Ian Puleston-Davies.

The official synopsis for the new series teases that the lead character is “trying to be a better police officer, a better man, and most importantly, a better father to his daughter Tilly.”

However, he “wants” and “needs” a day job, “but is he prepared to risk everything to get one?”

Meanwhile, Rachel Hargreaves is putting her life back together too. “She's still fuming at the way Chris broke her dreams of being a police officer and dragged her down with him into the dirt, and now she's desperately trying to take control of a life and a career that sometimes feels like it's slipping away.

"But after working with a succession of 'normal' coppers, Rachel is starting to realise she's got more in common with Chris than she'd ever want to admit. As they are sucked back together, and into the night, they must pull each other back into the light.

"But then a routine stop on a black Range Rover changes everything, and suddenly, the darkness beckons once again."

Watch The Responder series 2 on BBC iPlayer and BBC One from 5th May.
