Doctor Who series 14 only begins in May, but fans are already being teased about its “devastating” finale.

Speaking in an interview with SFX magazine, the programme’s current showrunner and lead writer Russell T Davies shared that while every episode of Ncuti Gatwa’s first series will “stand on its own”, they will all also “build and build and build to ‘The Most Devastating Finale.’”

According to Davies, seemingly like his previous seasons as Doctor Who’s showrunner back when the programme was restarted by the BBC in the mid 2000s, series 14 will feature “a running theme and running story” throughout, as well as eight separate stories.

Earlier this month, the BBC revealed the titles for all eight of Ncuti Gatwa’s upcoming episodes, with the finale terrifyingly entitled ‘Empire of Death’.

Davies told SFX that fans should expect this to be “literally, the biggest finale ever”, and shared: “There's some shots of that in the trailers coming up. Oh my god, you're gonna die.”

While the BBC for now remain mostly tight-lipped about what’s in store for the Doctor and his new companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson), the It’s a Sin and Queer as Folk writer has shared a few other hints about the show’s upcoming storylines over the past week.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the showrunner teased what fans can expect from Gatwa and Gibson in series 15 (also known as season two overseas). As that series began production in Cardiff, he shared: “We’re heading into season two, and my God, Ruby Sunday is important to that. There’s good stuff to come.”

Seeing as we know Ruby’s history (first introduced in her first episode, The Church on Ruby Road, which aired on Christmas Day 2023) will be important to the upcoming series and beyond, it can be assumed it may play a part in series 14’s finale.

But to find out why Davies has warned fans that the episode will be “devastating”, we’ll just have to wait until the full episode airs later this year.

Doctor Who series 14 will begin airing on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on 11th May 2024.
