Steve Carell has opened up about whether he would return to any kind of future The Office revival.

Over recent weeks, it has been revealed that The Office US co-creator Greg Daniels is teaming up with Nathan for You’s Michael Koman to create a brand new series set in the same universe as the original series - but not a reboot of the former show.

According to Variety, the official synopsis for the new series is: “The documentary crew that immortalised Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a dying historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it with volunteer reporters.”

Stars including Star Wars’ Domhnall Gleeson and The White Lotus’ Sabrina Impacciatore are reportedly signed onto the project, but fans of the original show are all wondering whether any of the old cast will be returning to the show.

Speaking on the red carpet of his The Office co-star John Krasinski’s latest film IF - for which he reunited with Krasinski to voice once of the family-friendly film’s main characters - Carell suggested fans should not get their hopes up for a Michael Scott cameo in the new series.

“I will be watching but I will not be showing up,” the Despicable Me actor told The Hollywood Reporter on Monday (13th May). He went on to explain: “It’s just a new thing and there’s really no reason for my character to show up in something like that.”

Carell was full of enthusiasm about the project, however. “I’m excited about it, it sounds like a great conceit,” he told reporters. “I love the idea – I guess it’s set in a failing newspaper company, and I worked with Domhnall Gleeson, who is one of the leads; I did [the 2022 series] The Patient with him and he’s an excellent actor and a super nice guy so I think it’ll be great.”

IF will be released in cinemas on Friday, 17th May.
