Ahead of the new season of their hit comedy, Trying co-stars Rafe Spall and Esther Smith have shared some lovely news.

The actors, who play couple Nikki and Jason in the acclaimed AppleTV+ series, are also a couple in real-life, and they have just announced that they are expecting their first child together.

With the fourth season set to arrive this month, the pair shared their happy news during an appearance on ITV's Lorraine today (14th May).

Cuckoo’s Esther said: “I’ve got a little bump" whilst holding her stomach. Hot Fuzz and The Ritual star Rafe added: “It’s really exciting, we’re really excited.”

This will be Esther’s first child, while Rafe has three kids with his ex-wife Elize Du Toit.

With Trying returning to our screens on 22nd May, and the duo told Lorraine that a big name is making a guest appearance in the new season. “We’ve got Oscar winner Jim Broadbent. That was a real thrill,” Rafe said.

Esther added: “I got to dance with Jim Broadbent. What a dream. I was literally beaming the whole day. Don’t look at our feet, just look up.”

In addition, Blue Lights actor Sian Brooke will return as Nikki's sister, Karen, while Darren Boyd from The Outlaws will also reprise his role as her husband, Scott.

The series follows the travails of Nikki and Jason as they try to conceive a child amid fertility struggles. They ended up adopting two kids, and the new season will jump forward six years to discover that Nikki and Jason are experienced adopters who have built a lovely little nuclear family, enriched by an extraordinary support network.

However, as their teenage daughter Princess (Scarlett Rayner), starts to yearn for a connection with her birth mother, Nikki and Jason will find themselves confronted with the ultimate test of their parenting skills.

The heartwarming show has proved popular with viewers, causing Rafe to say: “It is a show about good people trying to be good and I think that all of the audience identify with that.

“We all see ourselves as good people in difficult situations. They are a couple that have a great deal of love for each other and those around them and I think that’s really moving and warm and lovely.”

Trying season 4 is on Apple TV+ from 22nd May. Lorraine airs weekday mornings on ITV.
