Mamma Mia star Meryl Streep has shared an update about the chances of her appearing in the third instalment of the franchise, and it is potentially good news.

The Hollywood superstar has confirmed that she’s due to have a meeting where she will learn how it is proposed she could return for a third dose of the massively popular musical movies series.

As fans will know, the return of Meryl’s character Donna isn’t massively straightforward, as it was revealed in the 2018 sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, that she had died.

Speaking to Deadline, the actor admitted: “I don’t know how they’re going to do it. They have an idea. I haven’t heard it yet but it’s in [my diary] and I’m going to hear about it pretty soon.”

Excitingly, she added: “Of course I want to do it. I think folks love it.”

Last year, Mamma Mia creator Judy Craymer revealed that a third film in the ABBA-based series is "in its earliest stages". Whilst sounding a cautionary note and explaining at the time that the project was not "official", she said, "I don't want to over-egg it, but I know there's a trilogy there,” she added.

Whilst we wait to see whether Mamma Mia 3 will come to light and, indeed, feature Meryl Streep, we can at least look forward to seeing her in the new season of Only Murders in the Building.

Season 4 of the hit Disney+ series will be back on Tuesday 27th August, with the Mamma Mia icon back as Loretta.

The new episodes will feature a wealth of Hollywood talent, such as Melissa McCarthy from

Bridesmaids, The Hangover star Zach Galifianakis and Eugene Levy from American Pie.

Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria will also join the cast, as will Molly Shannon from The White Lotus and The Big Sick’s Kumail Nanjiani.

And, of course, our favourite podcasters Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) are back, as they try to get to the bottom of the shocking events at the end of season three surrounding Charles’ stunt double, Sazz Pataki.
