Strictly Come Dancing star Amy Dowden will front a new documentary about her cancer journey.

The professional dancer was forced to miss last year’s series of Strictly after being diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in May 2023. She had what she hoped was her final chemo treatment in November, and made a brief appearance in the final. In February, a health check showed there was "no evidence of disease".

Following exciting news that the Welsh star will be properly back in the next series of Strictly, it has now been announced that she will open up about her diagnosis and treatment in a BBC documentary. The film, which has the working title Amy Dowden: Fight of My Life, will air on BBC One this summer.

Speaking in a statement, Amy said: “It was an exciting new chapter in my life, but finding a lump on my breast changed my life," she said in a statement announcing the documentary. I never thought at my age I would get cancer and, despite having family members and friends who were cancer survivors, had no idea just what the impact on my life would be.”

She added: “I’ve learnt so much about myself and what a cancer diagnosis means on this journey. I hope others find hope and strength from this film, and that it encourages everyone to check themselves, no matter what age you are.”

The Welsh dancer made the decision to allow cameras to follow her journey with cancer six days after she was diagnosed, and filming took place across 15 months.

Following the announcement that she will return to the Strictly dance floor for its 20th anniversary series, Amy took to Instagram to say that she is “so happy and grateful to be back”. She added: “I can’t wait to be back doing what I love most in the world, dancing! Feel blessed and more excited than ever. Bring it on!”
