Desperate Housewives star Teri Hatcher is back in new series, WondLa, which lands today (28th June) on Apple TV+.

The animated sci-fi fantasy show follows Eva, a curious, enthusiastic, and spirited teenager, who is raised in a state-of-art bunker by Muthr, a robot caretaker. On her 16th birthday, after an attack on Eva's bunker, she finds herself on the surface of a strange planet with no other humans to be found. There, she needs to find her home and her true destiny.

Lois & Clark's Teri voices Muthr, and she has spoken exclusively to virginradio.co.uk about the relationship between her character and that of the lead, voiced by actor and So You Think You Can Dance winner Jeanine Mason.

When we asked what she found relatable about playing the mother figure to a rebellious teen, being a mum herself, Teri replied: “I don't really have levels of tension with my daughter, and in a funny way, I sort of never really have. I don't know why, she's 26 now, and we have talked about that before. Do we ever fight? we sort of don't, so I can't say that Muthr and Eva's relationship mimics my experience, necessarily.

“But where there are similarities, is certainly balancing the idea that as a mother, your job is to nurture and to keep them safe, but then at the same time, you are tasked with letting them go.”

The actor, who played Susan Mayer in Desperate Housewives, continued: “I mean, that really is your whole job, to raise a child who's independent and capable enough to function without you. And it's almost like, it does not compute, you know, in a human mother's mind, it's very hard to think about ever letting your child go off.

“As a mum, I really did try to always remind myself that my job here is to raise an independent, functioning, happy, healthy person, not to keep a sort of tethered tie on her.

Muthr is a robot, so she's less burdened with that emotional connection, but she's not, you know? It's almost unfamiliar to her, because her programming that she has as a computer doesn't really support what she's feeling in her emotions. So, it is a lovely, warm relationship.”

During her exclusive chat with virginradio.co.uk Teri also spoke about how she still “treasures the relationship” she has with Andrea Bowen, who played her character’s daughter Julie in Desperate Housewives, and it seems they will once again pair up for a rather special occasion.

“I’m still very, very good friends with Andrea,” Teri shared. “I happen to be going to her wedding this summer, which I can’t believe. I can’t believe she’s gotten old enough to get married, it’s so weird! She’s very good friends with myself and my daughter.”

WondLa begins on Apple TV+ on Friday 28th June.
