Call The Midwife hints ‘all will be revealed’ in new on-set photo of Christmas Special

Call the Midwife knows how to treat the fans as they’ve just hinted at what’s to come in their 2024 Christmas special. 

Yes, we’re only in July but the team behind the Call the Midwife social media is keeping fans satisfied with updates from the set, and have just revealed a brand new photo from the Christmas special filming featuring Georgie Glen as Miss Higgins. 

In the behind-the-scenes snap shared to Instagram, Higgins is surrounded by bowls of brussel sprouts, and is busy peeling away ahead of a festive fest.

The caption reads: “We've just got our hands on this photo from the set of the Call the Midwife Christmas Special, which comes to your screens this holiday season 2024! It's a wonderful behind-scenes portrait of our own Georgie Glen, as the redoubtable Miss Higgins. 

“But we couldn't help noticing a great profusion of that most Christmas of British vegetables..... SPROUTS! Lots and lots of them!”

The post adds cheekily: “Now the humble Brussels sprout is a vegetable that... how can we put it... divides opinion amongst our yuletide diners - particularly children! 

“There is an enduring love/hate relationship with this maligned staple amongst the British - some will even complain of its powers to induce rather more digestive activity than is desirable or polite! ;-)

“And yet it remains a centrepiece of the traditional British Christmas meal. And the more curious amongst you might wonder why there are quite so many spouts being prepared by Millicent here.... All will be revealed!”

The post then finishes up with the teaser: “Call the Midwife will return with a new Christmas Special and Series 14 in 2025.”

Fans rushed to the comments with elation over the brand new look at the special, with one fan writing: “OMG Series 14 I am@beside myself with excitement. This is THE BEST news!!! Cannot wait!!! Whoop Whoop.”

Another commented: “Wow literally can’t wait for Xmas day,” while a third said: “Beyond excited already.”

Not much has been revealed about Call the Midwife’s Christmas special or series 14’s plot just yet, but speaking at an event promoting series 13 last year, show creator and head writer Heidi Thomas teased how certain elements of series 13’s story would continue into series 14. 

These include the story of new midwives Rosalind Clifford (Natalie Quarry) and Joyce Highland (Renee Bailey), plus the storyline about the real life fight nurses began in 1969 for better pay and conditions.

Someone else who will continue her story into series 14 will be Trixie, who was confirmed to be returning by actress Helen George herself. 

The actress posted a photo of her dressed for work on-set playing the beloved midwife on her Instagram story in May 2024.

How big a role Trixie will have in this year’s Christmas special and the show’s 14th series is unclear, but fans can rest assured she will be making an appearance.
