Stars from shows including Line of Duty and Blue Lights are joining the cast for ITV’s medical drama Malpractice’s second series.

The popular thriller show, which originally starred Niamh Algar as a doctor caught up in a medical malpractice scandal, will be returning to ITV1 and ITVX in the future with many new as well as old faces starring.

While Helen Behan and Jordan Kouamé will be returning to play their roles as the Medical Investigation Unit’s Drs Norma Callahan and George Adjei, series two’s doctor accused of medical malpractice will be played by Victoria star Tom Hughes.

Sherlock’s Zoë Telford, Blue Lights’ Hannah McClean, Line of Duty’s Ace Bhatti, Top Boy’s Seraphina Beh and Am I Being Unreasonable’s Selin Hizli are all also joining the cast for Malpractice series two.

As the show’s synopsis explains, Hughes will star as Dr James Ford, a psychiatric registrar in a North Yorkshire hospital whose “personal life is a mess” and whose colleagues “find him arrogant,” but who still “appears committed to his vulnerable patients.”

But when James finds himself torn between a new mother attending a routine postnatal check-up and the sectioning of a floridly psychotic woman during a busy on-call shift, “no one could predict the terrible consequences,” the show’s synopsis teases.

It continues: “As George and Norma uncover a hospital seemingly at war with itself, to what lengths will James go to preserve his position? Is he a doctor with a God complex, or the victim of wider problems?”

Written again by former doctor and series creator Grace Ofori-Attah, Malpractice season two is now filming in Belfast, and will feature five more episodes of medical cat and mouse thriller.

“I’m thrilled to be bringing back a second series of Malpractice,” said Ofori-Attah in a recent statement. “This time, I’m excited to be delving into the world of psychiatry, my medical speciality, with an incredible cast led by Tom Hughes, and fantastic crew led by [epsiode 1-3 director] Anthony Philipson. I can’t wait to get started.”

Malpractice season two will air on ITV1 and ITVX in the future.
