The casting director for the upcoming second Joker film, Francine Maisler, has spoken about what “really surprised” her about Lady Gaga’s performance.

The singer and actor plays Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix in Joker: Folie à Deux, and the film’s casting director has given her a ringing endorsement.

And her words of praise come despite the fact that she didn’t suggest the Grammy and Academy Award-winning sensation for the role.

Speaking about the actor at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, Maisley said (via Deadline): “She’s so good in it, you guys. She’s going to blow your mind.”

She continued: “I didn’t suggest Lady Gaga. It wasn’t my idea. That was [director] Todd Phillips, before me. But I will tell you, she’s really surprising, and really good. I saw it and I was really surprised.

“I mean, we all knew what she could do in A Star is Born, but I thought, ‘Oh, well, that’s kind of in her wheelhouse.’ Something she could do and just be real. But this… man, she’s good. Joaquin blows your mind, but that she could keep up with him, and be real, and not just wiped off the screen by what that role is and what the performance is, shows she’s good.”

The movie lands on 4th October 4, exactly five years after the critically-acclaimed first film was released.

It is also set to also star Brendan Gleeson from The Banshees of Inisherin, Zazie Beetz from Deadpool 2 and Being John Malkovich’s Catherine Keener. Also in the cast is Alan Partridge star Steve Coogan. A-ha!

The sequel is set to be a musical of sorts, and the narrative will once again focus on Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck who, after murdering Murray Franklin live on television at the end of the first film, is incarcerated in Arkham State Hospital.

There, he meets Harleen Quinzel and the two fall madly in love and experience musical madness through their shared delusions, while Fleck's followers start a movement to free him from Arkham, ultimately giving rise to the Clown Prince of Crime's criminal empire.
