The original Gladiator starred Russell Crowe as Maximus, but he’s not expected to return for this follow-up flick.

Once again helmed by director Ridley Scott, Gladiator 2 picks up in the years after the original story, which saw Maximus sold into slavery after his family was murdered, before fighting his way up the ranks to get revenge against the emperor who destroyed his life.

Connie Nielson plays Lucilla, the mother of Lucius, while the likes of Denzel Washington and Stranger Things star Joseph Quinn make up the rest of the star-studded cast.

Speaking recently about the new film, Quinn - who is best known for playing Eddie Munson in Stranger Things said: “I’ve seen little moments of footage. And it looks like everything that you could possibly want.”

In recent first-look images that have been shared on Instagram, we see battle scenes between Mescal and Pascal.

“I call him Brick Wall Paul,” Pascal is quoted as saying about Mescal. “He got so strong. I would rather be thrown from a building than have to fight him again.”

Revealing more about what fans can expect from the movie, which is set some 15 years after the events of Gladiator, Quinn continued: “It’s paying homage to the first film, but very much making its own thing.

“There’s some fantastic performances in it, and I’m very much looking forward to people seeing it,” he added, although he did admit is also “a little nervous about it.”

Set two decades after the first movie, Gladiator 2 will see Lucius now of age and estranged from mother Lucilla, after she sent him far away from the Roman Empire as a child to Numidia, in North Africa.

While Lucius enjoys a quiet life in Numidia, he’s forced to take action as the Romans begin their invasion into North Africa, and he’ll face Pascal’s General Acacius in the process.

Gladiator 2 is scheduled to be released in the United Kingdom on 15th November 2024.
