Joining Stephen in the new series are an array of stars, including Ashley Walters, who is best known for playing Dushane in Top Boy. He will play Detective Inspector Bascombe.

Erin Doherty, who portrayed Princess Anne in The Crown, will also star, as will Mark Stanley, who played very nasty Rob Hepworth in the final series of Happy Valley.

Also in the cast are Faye Marsay from Game of Thrones and The Responder's Christine Tremarco, while Owen Cooper will play Stephen's on-screen son, Jamie.

Netflix shared the news on X, saying: “NEWS: Stephen Graham, Ashley Walters and Erin Doherty will star in Netflix’s new one-shot crime drama Adolescence (working title).”

The series is set in Sheffield, and its official synopsis reads: "Adolescence tells the story of how a family's world is turned upside down when 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Cooper) is arrested and charged with the murder of a teenage girl who goes to his school.”

Stephen Graham will play Jamie's father, Eddie Miller. He is producing the series alongside his wife, Hannah Walters.

Taking to X to share an update on how the new show is coming along, co-writer Jack Thorne wrote: “Adolescence is going great. It’s the sixth time I’ve worked with Stephen Graham and honestly I’ve never met a happier actor. He gets so excited. We are all in his playground and he’s giving us big pushes on the swings. I love him.”

The writer - known for the Harry Potter & the Cursed Child play as well as films such as Enola Holmes and the TV show His Dark Materials - added that the writing is “just streaming out of [Stephen] at times,” that “Phil is killing it as a director” and that “the cast are magnificent. The crew superb.”

No release date has been announced at this stage.

Adolescence will stream on Netflix.
