Matthew Macfadyen has opened up about how he “didn’t enjoy” playing Mr Darcy in 2005’s Pride & Prejudice.

Speaking about his role in this summer’s blockbuster Marvel film Deadpool & Wolverine with CBS Mornings, the actor was also asked about his increasingly beloved turn as the famous Austen character alongside Keira Knightley's take on Elizabeth Bennet.

“You’ve said you didn’t really enjoy playing Darcy?”, the interviewer asked Macfadyen, who was quick to respond chuckling: “No, I didn’t!”

“I feel bad saying that,” the actor added, “But I didn’t. There were moments I had a good time, but I wish I’d enjoyed it more. I wish I was less worried about [it].”

The Succession star continued by explaining why he’d struggled to enjoy his time filming the movie. “I felt- maybe I felt a bit miscast or ‘I’m not dishy enough’ or ‘I’m not-’ you know. But it worked out!

“I think probably the most flattering thing that happens to me now is people say: ‘Were you Mr Darcy?’ And it’s a good 20 years later, so I think ‘I can’t be ageing that badly!’”

Macfadyen stars in Deadpool & Wolverine in the role of the TVA’s Mr Paradox, alongside leads Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman and Emma Corrin.

In Deadpool & Wolverine, the famous R-rated merc with a mouth (Reynolds) meets his match when he is forced to pair up with X-Men legend Wolverine (Jackman) in order to save the world.

Speaking with virginradio.co.uk and other press at a special screening event in London earlier this month, Ryan revealed that filming the third Deadpool movie was a dream come true.

“I don't think I’ve ever been happier on a film set,” the Wrexham FC co-owner shared. “[And] I don’t think- I know I’ve never been sadder when a movie ended…

“I feel a sense of freedom when I play Deadpool that I just have never felt anywhere else,” he added. “It's really remarkable. I love it.”

Deadpool & Wolverine will be released in cinemas on Thursday, 25th July.
