Who got a House of the Dragon cameo that also doubled as a Game of Thrones easter egg? Fans have erupted with excitement and jokes!

Winter may be coming, but fans are ablaze with excitement after spotting a cheeky cameo from none other than George R.R. Martin in Episode 7 of House of the Dragon.

Amongst all the fiery dragon antics and Daemon finally getting his comeuppance, the showrunners slipped in a tribute to the mastermind behind the Seven Kingdoms.

Now, House of the Dragon isn't typically a show for cameos. But with stars like Milly Alcock and Paddy Considine popping up in Season 2, it seems the gates of King’s Landing have opened wide for some delightful surprises.

In this latest episode, eagle-eyed fans might have noticed the legendary author lurking in plain sight.

During the intense scene where Oscar Tully artfully knocks Daemon down a peg in front of the Riverlords, viewers can catch a glimpse of Harrenhal’s Weirwood tree in the background.

Carved into the bark is a face unmistakably resembling George R.R. Martin himself!

It’s not an exact replica, but with those distinctive features, there's no mistaking the homage.

Production designer Jim Clay spilled the beans in the behind-the-scenes featurette for the episode.

“Ryan [Condal] wanted to do it as a bit of a tribute. The idea was that it gradually started to disappear back into the bark of the tree,” Clay explained.

Even Martin himself was chuffed when he saw it, telling the team: “That’s really cool guys. Thank you.”

It’s a well-deserved nod to the author, who almost had his on-screen moment in the original Game of Thrones pilot as a Pentoshi nobleman.

Unfortunately, that scene never saw the light of day after extensive reshoots.

So, this Weirwood tribute is the closest fans get to seeing Martin in the mythical world he created—at least for now.

But in true fan fashion, the internet wasted no time turning this Easter egg into a meme-worthy moment.

One cheeky X user quipped: “He needs to get out of that tree and finish Winds of Winter.”

Another chimed in: “This is why he hasn’t finished Winds of Winter. He’s trapped.”

The jokes kept rolling in like wildfire.

“GRRM will literally become a tree before finishing Winds of Winter,” a third wrote.

Another fan took it further, saying: “We need to get this tree butchered down to form the paper pages of Winds of Winter ASAP.”

It's all in good fun, but the ongoing saga of the long-awaited Winds of Winter continues to be a hot topic.

In the meantime, fans can enjoy hunting for more Easter eggs and hidden nods throughout House of the Dragon.
