DC Studios boss James Gunn has shared some massive news ahead of the release of the highly-anticipated Superman movie.

Directed by Gunn too, the upcoming Superman: Legacy will see David Corenswet don the infamous red cape to play Clark Kent and his superhero alter-ego, while Marvellous Mrs. Maisel actress Rachel Brosnahan will star as Lois Lane.

Gunn confirmed the new Superman adventure in February 2023, and returned behind the scenes as writer and director for “the true beginning of the DCU”, set for release in July 2025.

Now, Gunn has shared a major update, telling fans that filming for Superman: Legacy is officially done and dusted, uploading a picture of their first week shooting in Norway to announce the news. The snap features Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult, who will star as villain Lex Luthor.

“And that’s a wrap,” Gunn wrote on Instagram alongside the chilly-looking photo. “God bless our cast and crew whose commitment, creativity, and hard work have brought this project to life.

“I set out to make a movie about a good man in a world that isn’t always so much. And the goodness and kindness and love I’ve encountered on a daily basis on the set has inspired me and thrust me forward when I felt too spent to move on my own.”

He continued: “Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. It has been an honour. The destination has been Superman, but the journey has been the toil and the laughter and the emotions and ideas and magic we’ve shared together on set – and for that I am forever grateful.”

Superman: Legacy is part of DC Studio’s eight to 10-year plan to reinvigorate the DC Comics movie franchise, which had released the likes of Black Adam, Justice League and The Suicide Squad.

Co-CEO of DC Studios Peter Safran revealed more of the plot last year, saying: “It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks that kindness is old-fashioned.”

Somebody making their DCU debut when Superman lands in cinemas will be Will Reeve, the son of iconic Superman actor Christopher Reeve

It’s understood that Reeve will have a cameo role as a TV reporter in the new Superman flick, turning his real life job as a correspondent for ABC News into fiction for the role.

Superman: Legacy is due out in cinemas in July 2025.
