Sweary real-life drama Wicked Little Letters has just found itself at the top of Netflix’s movie chart, just days after being added to the streamer.

The historical flick, starring Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley, is based on a true story. Set in 1920s Littlehampton, Wicked Little Letters focuses on neighbours Edith Swan (Colman) and Rose Gooding (Buckley) who discover obscene and foul-mouthed letters being targeted towards the former and others in the little seaside town.

Wicked Little Letters is so foul-mouthed in fact, that there’s a swear count of 71, with the only other films rivalling that number being The Wolf of Wall Street and Casino.

Wicked Little Letters landed at the number one spot, only five days after it was released onto the streaming platform. For the week of 22nd-28th July, the raunchy feature found itself third on the list, but had only been available for three days.

Currently, Harry Connick Jr.’s rom-com Find Me Falling is at the official top slot for the week, gathering  16,100,000 views globally, but it’ll all be to play for come Monday when the chart refreshes.

Fans have been praising Wicked Little Letters on social media since the hilarious comedy landed on the streamer. One wrote on X: “Knowing it’s based on true events made it more amusing. It’s witty, not practical, lighthearted, & quirky amongst other things. It will make u double take at the screen & burst in laughter. Jessie Buckley & Olivia Colman were amazing. A series would be gr8.”

“The entire cast of Wicked Little Letters is cinematic perfection,” wrote another, while a third said: “Just watched #WickedLittleLetters on Netflix, not only is a good quality film but the cast is just superb. Jessie Buckley is amazing, Olivia Coleman is as usual captivating but the rest are awesome. Especially Joanna Scanlan. I actually love her.”

Another commented: “Enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to. The swearing was on another level but the acting was so good. Olivia Coleman and Jesse Buckley #WickedLittleLetters Netflix. A true story too.

Virginradio.co.uk caught up with Women Talking star Buckley on the royal purple carpet in February when the period piece was released in cinemas, and she told us how she felt reading the script (and the scandalous letters) for the very first time.

She exclaimed: “I thought ‘Thank God’ somebody’s telling the truth that British women and women and Great Britain isn't this tea cup of cosy kitchens and women talking about cooking dinner for their husbands.

“We're much naughtier and mischievous and inventive. I mean, Edith's letters were incredibly inventive. There was a huge scandal. It’s like the Wagatha Christie of the time, and two women ended up going to prison because of this.”

Jessie is of course referring to the legal drama between WAGs Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy. Vardy eventually lost a libel claim against Rooney, who famously claimed Vardy had leaked private information about her to the press.

The Wild Rose actress also couldn’t stop gushing about her co-star Colman, who she previously shared the screen with in The Lost Daughter.

“I would die for Olivia Colman,” Jessie shared. “She’s just, in her heart, the most incredible human first and then she happens to be the world's most extraordinary actor. She's such a pal, we just had so much fun making this, we hardly ever talked about work.

Wicked Little Letters is available to watch on Netflix now.
