The beloved toys are back, and this time they're taking on technology in the highly anticipated sequel.

Woody, Buzz, and the gang are set to return in Toy Story 5, and it looks like they’ve got a brand-new nemesis—technology!

Pixar, who were funded by technological titan Steve Jobs, has revealed the first tantalising details about the next chapter in the beloved franchise, and this time, our favourite toys are going head-to-head with tablets and other electronic gadgets.

During the D23 2024 event, director and writer Andrew Stanton dropped the bombshell that Toy Story 5 will revolve around the clash between toys and tech.

"It will be about toys going against electronics," Stanton announced, sending fans into a frenzy.

One of the first images revealed Bonnie, the toys' new owner, tucked under her covers, completely engrossed in a tablet—clearly a sign of the times and a potential threat to the toys’ place in her heart.

But it wasn’t just tablets and tech that stole the spotlight. Fans were treated to glimpses of other familiar faces, including a shot of what appeared to be 50 rogue Buzz Lightyears, setting the stage for what could be an epic battle between the space rangers.

Jessie, the yodelling cowgirl, also made a brief appearance in the sneak peeks, hinting that she’ll have a significant role in the upcoming film.

With only a few images and a basic plot outline shared, Stanton kept most of the details under wraps, leaving fans eager for more.

However, Pixar did treat the audience to a short video featuring the franchise's iconic little green aliens, who seem just as excited as we are about what’s to come.

Let’s not forget, Toy Story 3 had many of us reaching for the tissues back in 2010, seemingly bringing the franchise to a close with an emotional farewell as Andy passed on his beloved toys to Bonnie.

But Pixar wasn’t done with us yet. In 2019, Toy Story 4 reignited the series, only to tug at our heartstrings once more when Woody and Buzz parted ways in yet another tear-jerking finale.

Just when we thought it was over, Tim Allen, the voice behind the beloved Buzz Lightyear, teased fans earlier this year with a cryptic tweet: “See ya soon Woody, you are a sad strange little man and you have my pity. And off we go to a number 5! To infinity and beyond!”

The message left fans wondering—would Woody and Buzz reunite once again?

Well, wonder no more! Pixar's creative chief officer, Pete Docter, confirmed to Variety that Woody and Buzz will indeed be back together for another adventure, much to the relief of fans worldwide.

“We have another Toy Story, so Woody and Buzz are back,” Docter revealed, sending a wave of excitement through the fandom.

However, while Tim Allen’s return as Buzz has been confirmed, the participation of Tom Hanks, who has voiced Woody since the first Toy Story film in 1995, remains unconfirmed.

Disney announced back in 2023 that Toy Story 5 would hit theatres in June 2026, giving fans plenty of time to speculate about what’s in store for their favourite characters.

With other Pixar projects like Frozen and Zootopia follow-ups in the pipeline, Toy Story 5 wasn’t always a sure thing.

Producer Mark Nielsen had previously hinted that Pixar’s focus was on newer films like Onward and Soul, leaving the future of Toy Story uncertain.

But now, with the announcement of a fifth instalment, it seems Pixar isn’t quite ready to close the toy box just yet.

As we eagerly await the return of Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang, one thing is clear—whether it’s battling the latest tech or facing off against rogue space rangers, these toys aren’t ready to go quietly into the night. To infinity and beyond, indeed!
