Zoë Kravitz has opened up about how she rose to the difficulties she faced while making her directorial debut film, Blink Twice.

In The Batman star’s first movie, Kravitz’ fiancé Channing Tatum stars as tech billionaire Slater King. When the powerful entrepreneur invites a group of unsuspecting guests to his private island for a dream holiday, invitee Frida (Naomi Ackie) soon discovers that all is not what it seems when her friend suddenly goes missing.

Speaking with virginradio.co.uk and other press at Blink Twice’s European premiere earlier this week, Kravitz – who wrote, produced and directed the film – revealed all about how she found the creative process.

“[Directing] was great. I mean, it’s so difficult in so many ways, but it was very nice to not have to think about what I looked like at all,” the actress said. “And the process of birthing something and getting to look at [Channing]’s face was amazing.”

Zoë also opened up about how she and her film’s team managed to get Beyoncé’s blessing for her music to be used in the film.

“When we were shooting that scene, I played music because I wanted [the actors] to feel at their best, and Naomi and Audrey kept on saying: ‘Play Beyonce!’ And I was like: ‘We can't afford it! But I will put it on – but it will not be in the film’,” Kravitz explained.

“And then when we were editing, I was like: ‘Okay, let's just like, throw it in there and see how it goes.’ And it was, you know, it's unbeatable. And so I sent it to her team, honestly, expecting a hard ‘No’. I just felt like I had to at least say I tried. And she said yes!”

Also speaking with virginradio.co.uk at Blink Twice’s European premiere, Channing Tatum revealed what it was like to be directed by his financée in the film.

“You have to just surrender on a movie like this. Zoë, she's a sick puppy,” he said. “You always have a plan coming in, and then you have to listen after that, listen to the director and what they want. Zoe always took it to the next place.”

Blink Twice is out in cinemas now.
