My Mum, Your Dad season one couple Roger and Janey have spilled the beans about what falling in love in the public eye was really like.

Speaking exclusively with virginradio.co.uk at a launch event for the show’s second season – which starts tonight! – the couple who met on the first season explained how “ridiculous” but “lovely” their last year has been.

“It’s a crazy, crazy experience,” said Jayne, looking back on how the pair successfully found love on the single parent dating show. “I don’t think I’ll ever get used to how it happened. I think it’s mad… and in a lovely way, ridiculous.”

Roger agreed, echoing the surprise Janey shared while discussing how she met her now year-long partner “on a TV show,” and “it worked… I think it was the right timing for both of us, but we both didn’t know it at the time and it just happened,” Janey later reflected.

“Even my mum says ‘You both are so similar’... We’re very chilled, we’re silly, you know, which is just why we get on, but you would never to expect to find that [on a TV dating show].”

The pair credit the show for creating an incredibly trusting and safe environment for the My Mum, Your Dad singles on their retreat, but can’t explain quite what it is which helps make the sparks fly. “I don’t know how the show manages it,” Roger admitted. “It just works.”

Asked how the pair have found their relationship has blossomed since they met on the show last year, Janey explained: “We’ve had a wonderful year, so normal as well, as far as our relationship goes.”

Watching episode one of the second series of My Mum, Your Dad at last month’s launch event “brought back” many memories of their experience on the show. “And what was lovely is [realising] how far we’ve come since that initial going in that house.”

Reflecting on what it’s like being known for getting together on a popular TV dating show, Roger shared: “People [come up to us] and say ‘You have such a beautiful romance.’ And then you sit back and think, ‘Well yeah, it is, yeah.’

“You don’t think about yourself like that, and when people constantly say ‘Lovely to see your romance, your love story’ you think ‘That’s a bit strong.’ But then you think, ‘Well actually, it is a love story!’”

Janey agreed. “We’ve just gone along with our lives, but to everyone else it’s such, you know- When we get stopped in the street they’re like ‘Oh you’re still together!’ And we’re like ‘Yeah?’ But then we forget, you know, everyone was invested in our stories.”

“It’s something you just have to get your head around,” Roger reflected. “Because it just didn’t go away. I didn’t think there’d be any fame involved.

“I thought I’d be the person that’d sink [My Mum, Your Dad host] Davina [McCall]’s career! It didn’t turn out to be that way, but you just think it’s gonna die off, but it hasn’t… luckily for us it’s quite positive. People say it inspired them to go out and get on dating apps and to know that that life’s not over… which is great.”

My Mum Your Dad season two begins on ITV1 and ITVX tonight (16th September) at 9pm.
