Frank Ocean is to boycott the upcoming Grammy Awards because of their "failure to recognise and award black artists."
The singer's visual album and his studio record were not submitted for consideration at the ceremony, a decision Ocean explained was very much his own.
In an interview with , Ocean revealed the decision was a protest at the awards' perceived lack of diversity.
He told the newspaper: "It just doesn’t seem to be representing very well for people who come from where I come from, and hold down what I hold down.
"I think the infrastructure of the awarding system and the nomination system and screening system is dated. I'd rather this be my Colin Kaepernick a black football player who sat down in protest during the national anthem at a match moment for the Grammys than sit there in the audience."
The next Grammy Awards will take place in February.
