The Welsh rock 'n’ roller joined the Chris Evans Breakfast Show with Sky earlier and told him about undergoing vocal surgery, nearly packing in music - and coming out a whole lot stronger.
He said: “2019 was quite a big year for me personally. At the end of 2018 I was considering knocking the whole thing on the head.
"I was having thoughts that something needed to change, I couldn’t work out what it was and I was going through that process really.
“I went for a checkup at the doctors and I got diagnosed with a polyp on my vocal cords which for a singer is a very anxious situation.
“I went through the procedure of surgery and recovery, and during the recovery I had a lot of time to think because I wasn't allowed to speak for quite a bit of time…
“I thought I'd put a flag in the sand and book a solo tour which was something I've always wanted to do, to tell stories about how a lot of the songs I've written came to pass.
"Hindsight can actually offer a lot of humour on those stories even though the songs themselves are quite moving.
“I always wanted to make people laugh, make them cry… I can't really do that in Stereophonics.”
The singer chose not to tell anyone about his surgery until he was fully recovered and back to his best vocally.
He said: “I just thought, every time a footballer comes back from an injury, people say he’s not as good since…
“I needed to get a bunch of albums under my belt… because if I'd told people before, it just adds more pressure.”
What are his reasons for doing the exposing film? He explained: “I just wanted to put a story out there - I haven’t really shown much of my real life in 25 years.
“I’m quite a private guy, I don’t do social media… it’s kind of a weird thing for it to be out there for me, but I'm hoping people get off on it.”
