Following yesterday's sad news about Captain Sir Tom Moore, Boris Johnson announced today that there will be a nationwide clap at 6pm to honour the veteran.
The war veteran was a national hero after he raised millions of pounds for NHS charities with his walks around the garden. He eventually raised more than £30 million, and broke two Guinness World Records while he was at it.
His family confirmed he had passed away yesterday, aged 100. Captain Sir Tom had been hospitalised for pneumonia and had tested positive for Covid last week.
The nation has been tweeting in support for his family and loved ones, and sending messages about what an inspiration Captain Tom was, and how he brightened many people's days.
Boris Johnson announced this morning that there will be a national clap tonight in his memory. Addressing the Commons, he said that Captain Sir Tom had dedicated his life to serving others. The clap will also honour our NHS care workers.
“We all now have the opportunity to show our appreciation for him and all that he stood for and believed in,’ he said.
“That is why I encourage everyone to join in a national clap for Captain Tom and all those health workers for whom he raised money at 6pm this evening.”
Meanwhile, Sir Lindsay Hoyle said of Sir Tom: “His dignity and determination in raising money to support the NHS charities caught the nation’s mood at the most difficult time. He exemplified the best of our values.”
Many of his supporters have been calling for a statue or other permanent memorial to be put in place to honour his incredible legacy. No.10 also confirmed this morning that they support the idea.
