Doing the clothes washing is a simple task, right? Wrong. This Aussie laundry expert has shared the top five common no-nos you might be making without even knowing. Ashley Iredale from CHOICE has advised how to put the lovely back into your laundry with these simple tips.
Top tips on what to do - and what not to do when it comes to washing...
1. Fabric softener
Think a fabric softener is key? Think again.
Washing guru Ashley said that it “doesn't contribute” in any way and can make it worse by building up inside the machine and reducing absorbency.
He explained: “Worse still, they reduce the effectiveness of fire retardancy on clothes, so even though they all have pictures of cute babies on the bottles, they're an absolute no-no for children's sleepwear.”
2. Warm water
There's little difference between warm and cold water, so you can save pounds by choosing a cool cycle.
3. Loading the machine
Never over or underload the washing machine. Distribute evenly.
He explained: “Too little and you're wasting detergent, water and energy by not using your machine efficiently; too much and your clothes might not get clean, or you may reduce the lifespan of your machine.”
4. Put delicates in a laundry bag
Ashley explained: “Those clips on things like bras can also damage other items in the wash, or get caught in seals.”
5. Leave the washing machine door open
Or it could get mouldy. Leave it open to allow the machine to dry and air and help get rid of bad smells.
