The controversial conservatorship that has been the subject of the #FreeBritney campaign will come under the spotlight in a new Netflix documentary, entitled Britney vs Spears.

The streaming platform announced the upcoming project on Twitter, with a short 18-second preview, which contains audio of a phone call made by the pop icon to a lawyer, all the way back in 2009. In the clip, Britney can be heard saying: “‘Hi, my name is Britney Spears, I called you earlier. I’m calling again because I just wanted to make sure that during the process of eliminating the conservatorship…’ The clip then ends.

The documentary will be directed by Erin Lee Carr, and has reportedly (via NME) been in production for approximately one year.

The conservatorship started in 2008, when it was put in place by a judge so that Britney’s father, Jamie Spears, could manage her financial affairs and wellbeing. It has, however, come under continued and increasing public and legal scrutiny. Several of the singer’s peers have come out in support of her bid to end the conservatorship, and earlier this year, Britney told the court that it was “abusive”.

Britney said that the conservatorship prevented her from getting married to her boyfriend Sam Asghari, and that she could not have an IUD removed so that she could have children.

In a recent development, Jamie Spears filed a petition to end the conservatorship. The filing stated (via Metro): “As Mr Spears has said again and again, all he wants is what is best for his daughter. If Ms Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr Spears believes that she should get that chance.”

Britney briefly deactivated her Instagram account before reinstating it this week. Having taken some time away from the site to celebrate her recent engagement to her boyfriend, she returned, saying: “I couldn’t stay away from the gram too long so I’m back already.”

As yet, an exact release date for the Britney vs Spears Netflix documentary has not been announced, but it is expected to land soon.
