Writer and director of The Batman Matt Reeves revealed his version of Bruce Wayne was inspired by the iconic Nirvana front man, Kurt Cobain.

Talking about his experience writing the film in an interview for Empire magazine, the director said: “When I write, I listen to music, and as I was writing the first act, I put on Nirvana’s ‘Something In The Way’.

“That’s when it came to me that, rather than make Bruce Wayne the playboy version we’ve seen before, there’s another version who had gone through a great tragedy and become a recluse.”

He went on to explain he had first come across Robert Pattinson, who is playing the caped vigilante when he watched him star in Good Time (2017) and knew he would be perfect for the role.

He said: “In that movie, you could really feel his vulnerability and desperation, but you could also feel his power. I thought that was a great mix. He’s also got that Kurt Cobain thing, where he looks like a rock star, but you also feel like he could be a recluse.

“So, I started making this connection to Gus Van Sant’s Last Days, and the idea of this fictionalised version of Kurt Cobain being in this kind of decaying manor.”

The latest Batman film is set to hit cinemas in March next year and promises to be a darker and more sinister portrayal of the vigilante than we are used to. Zoë Kravitz, who plays Catwoman in the upcoming film, has said it is “out of this world”.

In this reimagination of the popular DC comic, Wayne has been drawn deeper into the shadows of Gotham City with only a handful of people he can truly trust.

The city is ruled by corrupt officials, and as a result, the vigilante has become the “sole embodiment of vengeance amongst his fellow citizens.”

However, when a killer targets the elite and threatens to send the city into chaos, it forces Batman to delve further into the underworld of Gotham and find out their identity. But, during his mission for vengeance, Batman may be faced with some truths about his past.

Along the way he comes across the likes of Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman. Oswald Cobblepot or The Penguin (Colin Farrell), Carmine Falcone (John Turturro and Edward Nashton, aka The Riddler (Paul Dano).

Fans are already speculating about what will happen in this latest version of the Batman franchise after the drop of the official trailer.

Theories include secrets about Wayne’s childhood and the potential connection between supervillain The Riddler and Batman.

There were also rumors that the Joker would be making an appearance in the film as a menacing laugh (very similar to his) can be heard towards the end of the trailer.

The Batman will be released in cinemas on 4 March 2022.
