Everyone has a favourite mug, don’t they? There is something undeniably comforting in the familiarity of having a nice hot coffee at work or at home in your own cup. But what is not so comforting is how stained it can look, the more you use it.

It’s usually pretty easy to see which are people’s favourite and most well-loved mugs, as their insides are usually covered with rather unappealing brown marks. And it’s not that they’re dirty. You can wash them and wash them all you like - either by putting them through the dishwasher, or scrubbing them by hand, or both - but some of the more stubborn stains just won’t shift, no matter how hard you try.

However, there is a way of getting your mugs to look as good as new - or at least a bit less stained - and you may already have what you need to do so in your kitchen.

According to recipe and kitchen tips website Kitchn, a good way of shifting those annoying stains is simply by using baking soda and water.

Here’s how to do it.

Begin by pouring about a teaspoon of the powder into the bottom of your mug. Then add a splash of water to turn it into a paste.

Once you’ve got your paste, scrub it around the inside of your mug using a damp cloth or a sponge.

The way it (hopefully) works is that the paste will act as a gentle abrasive, meaning it is more likely to get to grips with some of the marks that ordinary dishwasher soap or washing-up liquid will miss.

Have a go at using the paste to clean your mug for a few minutes, then give it a good rinse and let it dry.

Hopefully, this should do the trick, and your favourite mug will look much cleaner!
