Sam Ryder will be representing the United Kingdom at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Turin, Italy.

The singer is one of the UK’s most-followed musicians on TikTok boasting an impressive 12 million fans on the app. He’s also gained some pretty high-profile fans such as Justin Bieber, Sia and Alicia Keys, who even posted a reaction video to his cover of If I Ain’t Got You.

Sam will be performing his original song ‘Space Man’ at the grand final in May after releasing it as a single from his debut album ‘The Sun’s Gonna Rise’ last week.

The news was announced by the Eurovision Song Contest’s official Twitter this morning.

In the post, they wrote: “Turin-finity and beyond! 🚀Sam Ryder will represent the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 at #Eurovision 2022 with SPACE MAN! 👨‍🚀”

Fans of Ryder and the song contest took to the comments to share their thoughts.

Some people were fairly optimistic about the announcement, and one person wrote: “Best UK entry HANDS DOWN in YEARS.”

Another agreed and said: “Just watched it on Facebook, totally our best song in years. Love it! And what an incredible singer Sam is too 🥰”.

A third said: “Never heard of the guy, but must admit that the song is surprisingly good. Let's hope we do well in the Grand Final! 🤞”

Other fans from elsewhere in Europe just hoped the song was enough to move the UK out of the bottom place.

One person said: “I think they’ll move up at least one position ❤️💙”

Another joked: “Good luck I hope you get some points this year cause the song is quite nice”.

The UK has notoriously done badly at the Eurovision Song Contest, and last year’s contestant James Newman received a dismal 0 points for his performance of the track ‘Embers’.

However, we’re hoping this won’t be the case for Ryder this year.

The 66th Eurovision Song Contest will take place in Turn, Italy after last year’s competition was won by the Italian rock band Maneskin.

This year the country will be represented by a previous contest, Mahmood, who will be performing an original song “Brividi” with fellow Italian artists BLANCO.

The last time Mahmood competed in 2019, he came second with his track ‘Soldi’.
