He has an iconic dance move of his own, and now former footballer Peter Crouch is set to join the panel on the new series of The Masked Dancer.

The ex-Liverpool and England star, who was famed for doing The Robot after hitting the back of the net during his long career as a striker, will replace Mo Gilligan, who is taking a break from the show.

Peter, who has become a podcaster and television presenter since hanging up his boots, will join Davina McCall, Jonathan Ross, and former Strictly professional Oti Mabuse in trying to work out which celebs are busting their moves when the show returns to ITV later this year.

He said: “The show is a firm favourite in our household and, when asked, I jumped at the chance to take part. I am competitive and I’m currently scrolling through friends’ socials looking for those tell-tale dance moves.

The former footy player joked: “Another plus is, by being on the panel, my social media, family and friends won’t be constantly speculating that I’m hiding behind one of the masks!”

Meanwhile, Mo Gilligan explained why he is stepping away from the competition, which is a spin-off of The Masked Singer. “I love being a part of the Masked Team so I’m gutted to be missing most of the series this year as I’ll be working in the US,” he said, before adding, “But I’ve got the perfect sub to take my place,” he said.

Mo added: “A legend on and off the pitch and one of the nicest guys in the industry, Crouchy knows a thing or two about fancy footwork, we’ve got this!”

Joel Dommett, who will return as host of the hit show, said: “We’re losing Mo for some episodes – but we have Peter ‘the Robot’ Crouch to fill his much smaller shoes. I’m very excited as I’ve always looked up to him in his career and because he is massive.”

Last year's Masked Singer saw Olympic gymnast Louis Smith crowned the winner as Carwash, after Bonnie Langford finished in second place as Squirrel.

The Masked Dancer will be back on ITV later this year.
