It seems like everyone had the need for speed when heading to the cinema to see Top Gun: Maverick.

The sequel, which was first released in May, has now surpassed the $1 billion (£818m) mark at the global box office, and is now the highest-grossing film of the year.

According to Variety, it’s also Tom Cruise’s first movie to pass £1 billion worldwide, making it his most successful film to date.

Over the weekend, Maverick made another $30.5 million (£25m), and in its fifth week too, which is an incredibly rare feat.

Top Gun: Maverick is only the second film to break a billion in the pandemic era, with 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home surpassing the total.

Paramount’s domestic distribution chief Chris Aronson said in a statement (via Metro): “I’m gratified we made this decision to hang on. This movie is going to have a huge run. It’s going to draw people to theatres who haven’t been in a long time.”

The movie's release date was rescheduled a total of seven times, and was originally meant to come out in July 2019, but that date was pushed back to allow more time to film the flight sequences.

Until now, Tom’s most successful film was Mission: Impossible - Fallout, which made $257m (£209m) when it came out in 2018.

Maverick has had an amazing run at the box office, which started within its opening weekend.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, in its first three days, Top Gun: Maverick made $248million (£197m) across the globe, marking Tom’s biggest opening weekend in his career.

In the US, the action film made a staggering $124million (£98m) across the weekend, which means TG:M is Tom’s first film to open to over $100million (£79m) across the pond.

36 years after the original Top Gun film, fans are finally getting to see what is in store for Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell.

This new movie comes with a host of new faces too, including Miles as Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s late friend Goose, as well as John Hamm and Ed Harris.

Top Gun: Maverick is in cinemas now.
