A John Wick spin-off called Ballerina, starring Bond actor Ana de Armas, is on the cards, with production set to start next week.

As reported by IndieWire, the announcement was recently made by Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer during an investors' call.

Ana de Armas, who featured in No Time To Die and Knives Out, is set to take the lead role in Ballerina, which will focus on a young assassin trained at the ballet school seen in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. The new story follows the lead character as she seeks revenge against those who were responsible for killing her family.

The movie will be directed by Len Wiseman (Underworld) and the script comes from Shay Hatten, who has previously written the third John Wick film, as well as Zack Snyder’s Army Of The Dead.

De Armas told Elle earlier this year that the Oscar-Winning writer-director behind 2020s Promising Young Woman, Emerald Fennell, is also on board. “It was really important for me to hire a female writer, because to that point when I got involved in the project, it was only the director, Len Wiseman, and another guy [Shay Hatten]. And I was like, ‘That's not going to work,’” she explained.

Before Ballerina lands, there will be the fourth in the regular run of John Wick movies, which sees Keanu Reeves once again play the titular assassin character. It will be the longest in the series so far.

The John Wick universe is set to expand further, with a prequel TV show also on the cards. The Continental will be set in the 1970s at the hotel for assassins that features heavily in the movies. It will focus on Ian McShane's Winston Scott (played by Colin Woodell) in his younger days, and will land on Prime Video in 2023.

And that’s not all, as a John Wick video game is also being explored.
