Derry Girls writer Lisa McGee has shared her utter shock at learning Hollywood titan Martin Scorsese is a big fan of her Irish comedy series.

The famed director ended up name-dropping the Channel 4 favourite while speaking at the Economic Club of Chicago’s annual black tie-dinner, which took place in October.

A month on, a Twitter user by the name of Adam Murphy shared a 10-second clip on the social media platform, in which Martin explained what he had been watching recently.

While chatting about his telly habits, Martin shared: “I watched, the other night, Derry Girls?”

His admission was met with cheers from the crowd, before adding: “Those nuns!”

Completely bowled over by the Goodfellas filmmaker being a fan of her work, Lisa retweeted the clip, and added: “Excuse me while I drop dead and actually die a death.”

Fans and fellow comedy friends were quick to share their congratulations at such a compliment from Scorsese.

Comedian Dara O’Briain replied: “And that’s it, you win. Shut it down, people, we have a winner,” while Sister Michael star Siobhan McSweeney responded with “Omg.”

Adding to the praise, one fan wrote: “You deserve it .By far the greatest Irish comedy series ever .You summed up a time in our History perfectly with Humour and poignancy.”

Another said: “Wow!! I mean shame it’s finished, that would have been an AMAZING cameo.”

It’s not the first time a big name has recognised the brilliance of the series, as The Simpsons once paid homage to Derry Girls in their own way.

Back in March, an inquisitive Simpsons fan spotted an ice cream parlour called ‘Dairy Girls Ice Cream’ in a recent episode of the long-running cartoon.

The Twitter account, called Wikisimpsons, quizzed producer Matt Selman about whether ‘Dairy Girls’ was indeed a reference to the Irish comedy.

Matt confirmed the title of the ice cream shop was a little nod to Derry Girls, and it left writer Lisa completely stunned.

In response to Matt’s confirmation, Lisa simply wrote: “I. Am. dead.”

Derry Girls is available to watch on All4.
