The hotly-anticipated Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion, may have only just been released, but director Rian Johnson’s thoughts are already turning towards the third film in the series.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery landed in cinemas last week, and doesn’t arrive on Netflix until 23rd December. However, Johnson has revealed that he is ready to “hop right into” working on the follow-up.

Last year, Netflix bought two more Knives Out movies, after the success of the original film from 2019. The first of the sequels, Glass Onion, sees the return of Daniel Craig as detective Benoit Blanc, this time heading to Greece in an attempt to solve a new murder-mystery.

The narrative deals with the fallout from tech billionaire Miles Bron’s yearly reunion on his private island, and stars an ensemble cast of Edward Norton, Andi Brand, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr, Kate Hudson (who recently joined the Chris Evans Breakfast Show with Sky), Janelle Monáe, Jessica Henwick, Ethan Hawke, Dave Bautista and Madelyn Cline.

In a new Deadline interview, Johnson said his mind has already turned to a third film. “It’s interesting. We structured the [Netflix deal] so that if I wanted to do something else next, I could. And I think everybody assumed I’d have a couple other random ideas — unrelated projects — that I’ve been kicking around. But, honestly, over the past couple of months, the most exciting creative thing to me right now is that third movie.”

He continued: “I think I’m going to hop right into it. Not because of a contractual obligation, but, genuinely, that’s the shiny object I find my nose pointed toward right now. [It’s] the idea of figuring out how it can be completely different from this one as well as the first one.”

Describing how he is “constantly jotting stuff down” in a notebook, he said that he is “trying to get ahead.” The filmmaker explained: “Even when I’m doing all the publicity for this film, I’m trying to start building up a structure, an idea, so that after New Year, when it’s time to actually get to work, I’m hopefully not just staring at that horrible blank page. But you always are, I guess.”

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, will have a limited release in cinemas from 23rd November, and will then stream on Netflix from 23rd December.
