Good news, or terrible news, depending on your point of view, as violins are 3D printed so more kids at more schools can learn to play them.
A violin is a precision instrument, a good one can cost millions and a mediocre one caen cost thousands so The Acoustical Society of America is 3D-printing them to make them more affordable for hundreds more children and adults to learn.
It’s made from a specially engineered polymer which mimics the acoustic qualities of wood, but these little fellas can be made for a tiny fraction for a literal millionth of the cost of a stradivarius.
Is this good news though? The sound of a child learning to play the violin is every neighbours worst nightmare, a sound like a cat being stepped on repeatedly and should in all honesty be reserved for the purposes of torture: “I’ll tell you where the weapons of mass destruction are, please, just not another scale!”

Amazing news from England in the 8th Century as researchers at Oxford University find some mind blowing graffiti on one of its most important artefacts.
Say hello, or probably something more like “good day, God is great” to Eadburg, a medieval woman and scribe in the 700s, who’s come to light, very literally as 3D imaging of a manuscript of Acts Of the Apostles was recently undertaken at the Bodleian Library at Oxford.
They found not only her name, etched into the margins many times, using just the quill, so she knew it was there, but it was invisible to her bosses. Moreover they found an amazing doodle, two people…one in the background with their arms outstretched as if to say “what have I done?” and someone else in the foreground, facing away from this person and doing a “talk to the hand” gesture. It’s an amazing snapshot into how medieval life was in some ways no different from our own. Have a look for yourself!
