The first teaser trailer for Steven Knight’s Great Expectations has finally been released.

The Peaky Blinders creator is behind the chilling new adaptation, which is expected to land on BBC One and iPlayer this Spring.

The teaser shows Olivia as the terrifying Miss Havisham as she speaks to a young Pip (Tom Sweet), who arrives at Satis House for the first time, ready to begin his education to become a gentleman.

“Let me see you…what a prize creature we have fished from the river.” Miss Havisham tells the youngster.

The coming-of-age tale, written by Charles Dickens, follows Pip, played by Fionn Whitehead, as he searches for a better life.

The official synopsis reads: “An orphan who yearns for a greater lot in life until a twist of fate introduces him to the mysterious and eccentric Miss Havisham and Estella (Shalom Brune-Franklin), showing him a dark world of possibilities.

“Under the great expectations placed upon him, Pip will have to work out the cost of this new world and whether it will truly make him the man he wishes to be.”

Great Expectations will also stars Top Boy's Ashley Thomas, A Christmas Carol’s Johnny Harris and Call The Midwife actress Hayley Squires, alongside Owen McDonnell, Laurie Ogden, Matt Berry, Trystan Gravelle, and Rudi Dharmalingam.

Toast of London star Berry will be taking on the role of Mr. Pumblechoock, the local seedsman who is charged with escorting Pip to Miss Havisham's house for the first time.

There is not just serious star power on screen, but there are some big names behind the scenes too, with Tom Hardy credited as a writer and executive producer of the period drama.

Blade Runners’ Ridley Scott, Dean Baker, David W. Zucker,  Kate Crowe and Tommy Bulfin with Brady Hood and Samira Radsi are all listed as directors of the series.

Great Expectations is expected to air on BBC One and iPlayer later this year.
