Prince William has surprised school pupils with a video chat on their lunch break.

The Prince of Wales was visiting Ipswich Hospital, when he made the impromptu call to one of the children of a staff member.

When he made the call, the Prince was with Kerry Gaskin, a manager at the East of England Ambulance Service, who had made some cupcakes for his visit. “Your mother's feeding me her cakes,” the royal said.

He then showed a cupcake to the camera and joked: “They're not very good!”

Amid laughter from the teenagers, William adds: "I've told her she wouldn't win Bake Off."

A later tweet from the East of England Ambulance Service - East Suffolk team suggested that the royal did in fact enjoy the cupcakes. “Thank-you to our very own @kerryjgaskin for making the royal cupcakes - Mary Berry would be proud.  Think it’s fair to say, the prince loved them! 🧁👑🚑” the tweet read.

Also during the chat, which has been shared on TikTok by one of the students, Hannah Wickison, the Prince says: “Who’s the guy, to the corner?” and points to a pupil who bears a resemblance to Ed Sheeran.

He also asks the students: “Are you guys doing any work?”

“No!” they reply. When the pupil’s mum said “You should be”, they explained that they were on a lunch break.

The Prince’s trip to Ipswich Hospital was apparently impromptu, and something of a surprise to staff. He posed for photos with various NHS workers, both inside the hospital and outside.

One member of NHS staff wrote: “This winter has been tough for @EastEnglandAmb teams so it was a wonderful morale boost to host @KensingtonRoyal today. He had time and kindness for everyone - Thank you William.”
