Could Danny DeVito be dusting off his Greek mythology in Disney’s live-action Hercules?

The Hollywood actor played the iconic sarcastic satyr Philoctetes (or Phil) in the original 1997 animation, when the hilarious character took the fledgling wannabe-god under his wing to become worthy of joining Mount Olympus.

While Disney have yet to confirm who will be voicing the cast of Guy Ritchie’s remake, Entertainment publication Big Freakin Robot now reports the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star is set to return.

Their sources say Danny has signed on for the project, which will also be produced by Marvel directors Anthony and Joe Russo.

It’s been 25 years since the original animation was released, and while it received a mixed response by critics at the time, it has since lived on as a fan-favourite of the Disney Renaissance era.

Tate Donovan starred as Hercules in the tale, taken from Greek mythology. Herc tries his best to return to his home to Mount Olympus by proving himself to be a true hero.

Susan Egan played sassy love interest Megara, while James Woods won praise for his take on wise-cracking villain Hades.

Good news is that while this update is still whirling on the rumour mill, Danny is more than up for flexing his satyr skills yet again, having previously made his feelings about returning as Phil very clear.

During an interview with WIRED in August, Danny joked: “I am the live-action Hercules. If they don’t put me in that, they don’t have a hair on their a**."

Disney are currently building up a jam-packed collection of nostalgic live-action remakes, with Hercules director Ritchie being behind the 2019’s re-imagining on Aladdin.

Before we see anything of Hercules, Phil or Hades, Disney fans can look forward to the live-action version of The Little Mermaid, starring American singer Halle Bailey

The underwater flick is expected to hit cinemas in May, and during a recent interview, Halle revealed how significant it was for her to be portraying a Disney princess.

She explained: "The fact that now it's getting to be played by me, a person who looks like me, a woman of colour, I'm just like, wow, I'm so grateful for what it will do for all the other little Black and brown boys and girls who will see themselves in me.

"Because I know if I had seen myself when I was younger, I think my whole perspective would've changed."
