If you're a fan of DIY and always browsing the latest trends to do up your house, then you might want to sit down for this one.

Nick Lewis is a Canadian interior designer.

He has shared his professional opinion on why people waste money when it comes to their decor.

Nick says people are lured in by trends, and splash the cash even when things don't look great.

He explained: "These are the items I see pop up over and over that people say they need to have them, and I'm going to tell you that I don't think that you do."

First up in the firing line: side tables.

"Think twice about whether every seat really needs it's own end table, because I don't think it necessarily does," he said.

He also thinks bedside tables aren't a necessity.

"If you've got a smaller bedroom, the chances are your nightstands are taking up valuable space, so unless you really need the storage there's no purpose for them", says Nick.

"You'd be better off with something like a basic shelf," he suggested.

Don't get him started on footstools and ottomans.

Maybe you think they will be used as extra seating, but Nick says they are a waste of space.

Even if you think you'll use them as extra seating when you have guests you should avoid them, since they take up a lot of room.

He isn't a fan of bar carts or drink trolleys, either.

"Do you really need to all that alcohol? I don't think you do. And I think you've got better places to store your glassware, maybe in the kitchen or in a bar cabinet," Nick said.

Spoilsport.

He also isn't a fan of seasonal decor like wreaths.

"Not only can adding home accessories to fit every holiday and season be pricey, but it's really easy to go overboard and end up with a tacky mess."
