Inspiring news from France and The Loire is set to become famous not just for fantastic wine and more castles per mile than anywhere in Europe but for a ground breaking electricity generating scheme that’s focused around a cemetery!

Say bonjour to St Joachim whose graveyard is almost constantly flooded in autumn, winter and spring so the mayor came up with an idea to cover it with rows of transparent solar panels which generate green electricity and divert the rain into tanks that are used to water municipal parks in the dry summer months.

Even better that they designed an algorithm that works out exactly how much power each household or company is using then reimburses the same percentage of free power across the whole community. This was it costs each resident €5 and they save about €200 a year on the electricity bills! Vive la France!!

When you arrive at a food bank called It’s A Bread And Butter thing, you never know what food you’ll be leaving with but one thing is for certain, you’ll be leaving richer for many other things.

At one of 90 U.K. locations where ‘Its A Bread And Butter Thing’ operate, you could be given expert help in getting a job, finding social housing, signing up to baby-parent classes or dealing with mental health issues.  And, of course, plenty of cups of tea.

Food comes from farms, factories and supermarkets and could be anything from a side of salmon, a bag of root vegetables, a punnet of strawberries and loads of other things - like The Long Table restaurant I featured earlier this week use - destined for the bin.

As a result, more than 100 tonnes of perfectly edible produce are saved from being wasted each week (equivalent to 1m meals a month) – all while helping its 45,000 members collectively save over £4.8m every year.  The model is so successful that it could inspire many others to follow it.
